DVLA announces new classic vehicle registration policy

Classic vehicle owners in the UK now have a much simpler registration process that recognises the historic identity of the vehicle as absolute thanks to a new policy from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency).

As of 26 August, any classic car will retain its original registration even if it’s modified, including conversion to EV power. The DVLA says it is easier to keep the original registration with the vehicle to chart any changes, but vehicles that have been subject to significant structural change or EV conversion require the registered keeper to inform the DVLA of any changes.

Like-for-like repairs and restorations will no longer require notification to the DVLA, providing the vehicle’s appearance is the same as when it was originally manufactured and there are no changes to the log book (V5C).

Dale Keller, CEO of the Historic and Classic Vehicles Alliance, said: ‘The policy changes by the DVLA encapsulate how industry and government working collaboratively can deliver better outcomes. It is testament to the hard work of the HCVA, and others, that the government has listened and acted with pragmatic changes that place the retention of historic identity at the forefront of registration policy, a move that will be welcomed by all historic vehicle specialists, owners, and historians.

‘The DVLA should be applauded for its engagement and commitment to deliver new policies that now recognise new technologies, techniques, and improved materials.

‘The positive impact these changes will have should not be underestimated in how they will support specialists and owners in protecting the UK’s historic vehicle industry, enabling over three million historic and classic vehicles to be kept roadworthy, relevant, and enjoyed by future generations.’

The DVLA says it will aim to process all classic vehicle registration applications within four weeks. Owners of vehicles that have previously had their original registration removed can reapply for the original registration mark and there is no time limit for this process.
