Stelvio Pass hits 200

The Stelvio Pass is marking its 200th anniversary since it was opened to traffic.

It took five years and 2500 workers to create the road that connects Stilfs in South Tyrol and Bormio in the Sondrio region. It is the second highest pass in the Alps and consists of 82 hairpins.

The Stelvio was used as a competitive hillclimb and Hans Stuck famously won there in a Mercedes-Benz SSKL Silver Arrows in 1932.

The pass has been a regular feature in the Giro d’Italia bike race and has been used by many car manufacturers for brake testing.
