Oddball open-tops head Toffen sale

Weird and wonderful convertibles are heading the lots at Oldtimer Galerie Toffen’s auction on Saturday 18 October.

Among the unusual soft-top cars for sale is a 1973 Lancia Fulvia F&M Targa Florio Barchetta replica that is estimated at CHF30,000-35,000 (£28,000-£32,650).

The original Lancia competed in the 1969 Targa Florio, while this replica was built by Scuderia Tricolore using a 1973 Coupé. It comes with a 30cm shortened body and the rood completely removed, while a tuned engine offers improved performance.

Another left-field sports car at the Toffen sale is a 1963 HG Special Roadster with an estimate of CHF35,000-40,000 (£32,650-£37,300).

The HG Special Roadster was built by British pilot Hugh George using his own chassis design and Ford V8 Pilot motor. However, the car was later converted to a 200bhp 2.0-litre Ford-Holbay engine by subsequent owner Graeme Simpson.

A different sporting take comes from the 2008 YES! Roadster 3.2, estimated at CHF20,000-25,000 £18,650-£23,300). This is a later version with the 3.2-litre VR6 engine from an Audi TT and has an aluminium and glass fibre body.

A 1988 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC Cabriolet by Feldevert is another unusual convertible entry in this auction and comes with a CHF65,000-75,000 estimate (£60,600-£70,000). It’s finished in Barolo Red and the fabric roof is electrically operated.

At the other end of the price scale is a 1995 Suzuki Swift Cabriolet that is predicted to fetch CHF2000-3000 (£1866-£2700). This is a factory-made convertible and was delivered new to Switzerland.

Rounding out the oddball open-tops is a pair of French beach cars in the shape of a 1970 Citroen Méhari and 1980 Renault 4 Rodéo. The Citroen is expected to make CHF13,000-16,000 (£12,100-£15,000), while the Renault has an CHF8000-10,000 estimate (£7500-£9300).
