The Beast is up for sale

The legendary Beast created by John Dodd is coming up for auction on Saturday 29 November at The Brooklands Velocity sale by Historics Auctioneers.

The sale is being held at Mercedes-Benz World and the Beast is one of the star lots thanks to its sensational looks and 27-litre Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine.

Conceived by John Dodds and created in the early 1970s, the Beast was said to have achieved speeds in excess of 180mph during testing on the German autobahn. It was included in The Guinness Book of Records as the most powerful car in the world when it first hit the road.

The car stirred up more headlines in 1981 when Rolls-Royce began legal proceedings in the High Court asserting trademark infringement as the car used radiator from the luxury car maker to acknowledge its engine.

Dodds lost the case and replaced the original radiator with a bespoke one bearing his own name.

The car followed Dodds to Spain when he moved there and became a familiar sight on the roads around Madrid.

Now back in the UK, the car has been wrapped in metallic grey, with the original paint preserved beneath. It has also had a retrim and has a pre-sale estimate of £75,000-£100,000.
