Peter Ustinov’s Mercedes heads to auction

Film star and raconteur Peter Ustinov’s 1928 Mercedes-Benz 36/220 S-Type Sports Tourer is heading to auction on Thursday 11 December with Bonhams|Cars.

The cars was delivered new to the UK in 1928 and owned by the actor from the mid-1950s through to the middle of the 1970s.

It was originally sold to Mr AW Dowding as a running chassis for the body to fitted in the UK on delivery, though it is not known which coachbuilder created the touring style of body.

Ustinov enjoyed the car before loaning it to the National Motor Museum in early 1973, when it carried a two-seater body. In 1975, Ustinov donated the car to the Museum and it was subsequently restored with its correct four-seat body made by Rod Jolly.

The car was last used in 1987 and is being sold for restoration with an estimate of £1.25-£1.75 million.
