A Renault 5 Turbo topped Iconic Auctioneer’s Race Retro sale, which saw 93 percent of car entries sold.
The strong results continued with 85 percent of motorcycles in the sale moving to new owners, which meant the company reported a total of £7 million in total receipts.
A highlight of the sale was the 1987 Renault 5 Turbo ‘Superproduction’ driven by Erik Comas to win that year’s French Supertouring Championship, which made £331,895 to set a new live auction world record for the model.
The 410bhp Renault was one of just three factory-built cars to this specification.
Another strong selling lot was a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B-STi, which sold for 25 percent above estimate when it reached £187,875.
A 1996 Ford Escort Cosworth Lux with only 3091 miles that was ordered new by Richard Parry-Jones as his company car performed very well to reach £132,750.
Proving that modern classics are very much in favour at present, a 1991 Volkswagen Golf GTI Rivage Cabriolet hit £36,000 when the hammer feel to set another live auction world record.
A 1985 Audi Sport Quattro SWB Replica, built to evoke the Group B legend and producing a reported 380bhp, exceeded its £70,000 – £90,000 estimate to sell for £112,500.
Rob Hubbard, Managing Director and Principal Auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers, said: ‘Selling nine in every 10 collectors’ cars offered and achieving £7 million in total sales at the first major event of the season is a strong statement.
‘The market is selective, but when cars are presented properly, estimated sensibly and backed by complete history, buyers respond. From homologation specials of the 1990s to genuine touring car icons and modern performance heroes, we saw depth of bidding across every part of the sale. We look forward to repeating this success at our next Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest in May.’
