The fastest watch on Earth is coming up for auction with the sale of the Casio AW-370/1318 worn by Wing Commander Andy Green when he broke the World Land Speed Record in 1997.
This is the actual watch worn by Andy Green when he reached an average speed of 763.035mph on 15 October 1997 in Thrust SSC in the Black Rock Desert in the US.
The Casio will be the highlight of the month-long auction run by the Buying Time Foundation that starts on Monday 15 June.
Andy Green bought the watch specifically to use during the development and record runs of Thrust SSC and it completed 66 runs with him in the car.
To this day, Thrust SSC remains the only land vehicle to have exceeded the speed of sound.
Andy Green said: ‘The watch was only worn during the Land Speed Record campaign, so the signs of light wear are all related to Thrust SSC. The dust on the strap is desert dust from the Black Rock Desert. The watch has remained in my possession and not worn since – it was languishing at the back of a drawer until now.’
Other watches in the auction include timepieces donated by Beaucroft, Brooklands Watch Company, Christopher Ward, Goldby Watches, Monro Adventure and William Wood.
Simon Jeffs, Buying Time Foundation co-founder and Brooklands Watch Company director, said: ‘The gift of a very special sports watch from Andy Green in memory of Air Commodore Jayne Millington – Andy’s Run Controller and partner during the 1997 Land Speed Record campaign – is incredible.
‘The foundation is funded through the auction of new watches kindly gifted by watch manufacturers. We are delighted and very grateful for their generosity.’
