Race cars head Bonhams’ Laguna Seca auction

Race cars will be the star attractions at Bonhams|Cars’ Laguna Seca auction on Thursday 13 August, including a 1967 Vollstedt-Ford 67B IndyCar driven by Jim Clark.

The Vollstedt is being sold without reserve, while a Lola-Ford T70 MkII CanAm that was driven by Dan Gurney is estimated at $1.1-£1.5 million (£840,000-£1.06 million). This is the only Ford-powered car to have won a CanAm race between 1966 and 1974.

Another 1960s machine on offer is a 1963 Jaguar E-Type affectionately known as ‘No 46’ and previously owned by actor Nicholas Cage.

The Hollywood star used the car to practice his driving for the film Gone in 60 Seconds. It was subsequently raced by Bernard Juchli of XK Unlimited and comes with an estimate of $175,000-$225,000 (£133,000-£170,000).

A 1956 Lotus Eleven has an estimate of $120,000-$160,000 (£91,000-£121,000). It was delivered new to the US and has a Coventry Climax FWB engine.

Keeping the US race car theme going is a BMW M3 GT that is chassis #00/002 and is estimated at $400,000-$500,000 (£300,000-£375,000). Built by Prototype Technology Group in the US, this car was raced by Hans-Joachim Stuck, Boris Said and Johannes van Overbeek.

A 2000 Diablo GT comes with a 575bhp 6.0-litre V12 and, although not a race car, was inspired by the company’s GT2 competition model to make it the ultimate roadgoing Diablo.

It has an estimate of $1.95-$2.45 million (£1.48-£1.86 million) and the 215mph car comes in Rage Black over its carbon fibre  bodywork.
