Colin McRae 1998 Safari Rally Subaru Impreza WRC for sale

A Subaru Impreza WRC98 used by Colin McRae on the 1998 Safari Rally is up for sale.

This car was registered by Prodrive with the number ‘R7 WRC’ and was one of the first batch of WRC98 cars made for the 1998 season.

It was built to Safari specification, which included raised suspension for more ground clearance, different shock absorber mounts, and a carbon fibre snorkel to cope with deep water. There is also a roof-mounted air intake and bull bars.

Despite a huge effort by McRae and co-driver Nicky Grist, the crew failed to finish the 1998 Safari Rally when the car’s oil boiled in the Kenyan heat.

After being sold to a privateer rally team, R7 WRC was acquired by a collector in 2017 who commissioned a full restoration back to its original Safari spec.

The car was driven by Colin McRae’s nephew Max at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed and is now for sale with Girardo & Co.
