The auction of the Stan Lucas Collection made a total of $33.9 million (£25.1 million) when the 99 lots were sold by Gooding Christie’s at the late collector’s Lucas Classic Tires in California.
All of the lots were sold without reserve and the sale set new records for the price achieved at auction including a 1911 Oldsmobile Limited Series 27 Seven Passenger Touring that made $5,065,000 (£3.75 million) and the $2,205,000 (£1.63 million) paid for a 1924 Doble Series E Roadster.
A 1915 Stutz Model 4F Bulldog Demi-Tonneau was another world record performer with a hammer price of $973,000 (£720,000), while a 1916 Crane-Simplex Model 5 Dual Cowl Phaeton also set a new bar with a sale price of $918,000 (£680,000).
Further world records were set with $412,000 (£305,000) for a 1921 Mercer Series 5 Raceabout and a 1910 Stevens-Duryea Model Y Seven Passenger Touring that made $390,000 (£289,000).
David Gooding, President of Gooding Christie’s, said: ‘The incredible success of our Saturday auction is a testament to the lasting legacy of Stan Lucas and his commitment to collecting only the greatest Antique, Brass, and Classic era cars. This historic auction brought together some of the most prominent collectors the world over, and as a result, many lots far exceeded estimates and notable world records were set throughout the day.
‘In over 60 years of collecting, Stan never sold a single car, and we are truly honoured to have had the opportunity to bring his cherished collection to market – celebrating not only the incredible collector that he was for all of these years, but also the very cars, models, and marques that he so cherished throughout his lifetime.’
