FBHVC warns of new classic car fraud

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs has issued a warning about a new type of fraud that could lead to classic car owners losing their vehicles to criminals.

It follows an attempt by a criminal to buy a car by claiming to work offshore and be unable to view the car but desperate to buy it. The fraudulent buyer then sends a cheque to cover the cost of transportation and asks the seller to forward the V5C registration document with it in the new keeper’s name.

Fortunately for the seller in this instance, the cheque was found to have been altered by the seller’s bank and returned, so the seller did not release the car as the funds had not cleared.

The FBHVC advises anyone selling a classic car who suspects fraud or is the victim of fraud to contact Action Fraud and the police.
