The remarkable Gymkhana film series is back as Hoonigan and Subaru announced the latest instalment will feature Travis Pastrana and the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo.
Filmed in Australia, the new latest episode of Gymkhana is titled Aussie Shred and uses many famous landmarks across the country as a backdrop to the stunts.
A 1978 Subaru Brat has been transformed with a 670bhp 2.0-litre Boxer engine built by Vermont SportsCar for the new Gymkhana film.
The motor revs to 9500rpm, hence the Brataroo 9500’s name, and it produces 680lb-ft of torque to drive all four wheels through a six-speed sequential SADEV gearbox.
While it looks like a Subaru Brat, the body has been made from carbon fibre and sits over a custom fabricated chassis and roll cage made to World Rally Championship standards.
The Brataroo also comes with sophisticated active aerodynamics to help with the car’s stability during the stunts featured in the Gymkhana film.
There are plenty of nods to the original 1978 Brat, such as a restored OEM radio, heater controls repurposed to adjust the active aero, and forged monobloc wheels with a four-spoke pattern.
Travis Pastrana was there for the Brataroo’s unveiling at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas US and said: ‘This BRAT’s completely unhinged – in the best way possible. It’s got the soul of a vintage Subaru with the tech to do things no Gymkhana car has ever done. Every part of it is designed to take abuse, fly big, and come back for more. It’s hands down the craziest Gymkhana car we’ve ever built.’
The new Gymkhana film will be released in early December.
