The McLaren F1 GTR owned from new by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason is due to be sold at auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale in August.
Finished in its unique and distinctive ‘Pop Art’ red and yellow colour scheme, it is the only F1 GTR in this livery and was owned by the McLaren factory until Mason bought it in 1999.
This car is the first of nine F1 GTRs built to 1996 race specification and is chassis 10R, which was used for testing ahead of that year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.
Converted for road use by McLaren and registered as ‘K40 MCL’ in 1999, chassis 10R became one of the earliest F1 GTRs adapted for use beyond the circuit. Additional work was completed by Paul Lanzante, whose connection to the model dates to McLaren’s 1995 Le Mans victory.
The car has a pre-sale estimate in excess of $35 million (£26 million).
